Reading Life Scrapbook
Reflecting on your Reading
You will have many chances to reflect on your reading.
On "Talk About It Tuesdays" you will have a chance to tell your tablemates what you are reading about. On "Write About It Wednesdays" we will reflect in our writing journals.
On "Freaky Fridays", I will give you a chance to do something creative to reflect.
Your Choice Reading Goal!
It is no secret that reading makes us smarter. But many lucky people also know that reading things that you find interesting, will also enrich your life!
This year I will ask you to set a reading goal and work to achieve that goal every week.
You will be expected to read 100 minutes every week. 50 minutes in class and 50 minutes outside of class.
How will you choose a good book that you will enjoy? That's the easy part!

Penny Kittle
Click Here for Penny Kittle's book list: Penny Kittle is the English teacher who has inspired me to take us on this reading journey. I’ve included the list in the link below because it’s a GREAT starting place. The document in the link has book titles listed by genre and theme, and the books are also HIGHLY enjoyed by high school students.
You can use this list and then go to Amazon.com to look up summaries of the book to see if it interests you.
Here’s a book list from Kennett High School with recommendations from students there:

So you get the idea. There are tons of websites out there to help you find an interesting book.
One tip that I suggest is to pair a good book with something you are learning about in another class. Love your Physics class? Read about Einstein! Can't get enough of WWII in History Class? There are thousands of WWII books out there. Love Choir or Drama class? Pick a memoir about a famous play write, actor or singer! You will be amazed at how this will enrich the classes that you already love. And you will have such cool things to add to class discussions!
(Warning...Be prepared to become the teacher's favorite student).
Lastly, listen to the books that your peers are reading. You will get great recommendations from them. If your BFF likes a book, there's a good chance you might like it too.
And as a VERY LAST RESORT....ask the adults around you, ie Teachers, Librarians, Parents etc. We actually read lots of books and get super geeked when young folks like yourselves ask us about them.
How will you show me that you've been reading?
